Young Justice premieres Jan 7th

Cartoon Network has announced that it's upcoming "Young Justice" series will have its series premiere on January 7th at 7pm (ET/PT). Based on both the "Young Justice" series that ran in the late 90's and the modern "Teen Titans" team, "Young Justice" was previewed in an hourlong special that aired on November 26th. The ongoing series is officially described as follows:

In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over — to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you're not just a normal teenager? What if you're a teenage super hero? How much harder will it be to prove yourself in a world of super powers, super villains and super secrets? Are you ready to come of age in such a world? Are you ready for life or death rites of passage? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you're worthy of the Justice League? That's exactly what the members of Young Justice — Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis — will found out … whether they have what it takes to be a proven hero.

Black Panther on DVD

Shout! Factory has announced a Jan. 18 release for Marvel Knights Animation: Black Panther on DVD.

The animated series' six episodes, based on the comic book by Reginald Hudlin and John Romita Jr., were originally intended -- but never aired -- for BET.

Black Panther features a voice cast including Djimon Hounsou as Black Panther; music artist and actress Jill Scott as Storm; Kerry Washington as Princess Shuri; Alfre Woodard as both Dondi Reese and Queen Mother; Carl Lumbly as Uncle S'Yan; and Stan Lee as General Wallace.

The Marvel Knights Animation: Black Panther DVD includes extensive bonus content and a graphic rich cover, plus a unique replica of comic book-style plastic sleeve packaging that bridges the comic book to DVD concept.

Here's how the series is described:

"Deep in the heart of Africa lies Wakanda, an advanced and unconquerable civilization. A family of warrior-kings possessing superior speed, strength and agility has governed this mysterious nation as long as time itself. The latest in this famed line is young King T'Challa, the great hero known worldwide as the Black Panther.

"Now, outsiders once again threaten to invade and plunder Wakanda. Leading this brutal assault is Klaw, a deadly assassin with the blood of T'Challa's murdered father on his hands, who brings with him a strong army of super-powered mercenaries. Even with Wakanda's might and his own superhuman skills, can the Black Panther prevail against this deadly invading force?"

Marvel Knights Animation: Black Panther DVD is priced to own at $14.97.

Eglee in talks to Executive Produce "Powers"

Newsarama reported: A television series adaptation version of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming's Powers has been in some stage of development at FX since at least February 2009, but Wednesday afternoon brought the most concrete news yet: news from New York Magazine's Vulture blog that Charles H. Eglee is in talks with the network and Sony Pictures Television to serve as executive producer and writer on the project.

The report was confirmed as fact by Bendis himself on his Twitter page. Eglee had served as a writer and executive producer on the first season of another TV show based on a long-running, creator-owned comic book, AMC's The Walking Dead; effectively serving as Frank Darabont's No. 2 on the series. A report on Deadline.com last week stated that the show's entire writing staff was fired, but was later disputed by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and fellow executive producer Gale Anne Hurd.

Eglee has nearly three decades of writing experience on TV, working on popular '80s hits St. Elsewhere and Moonlighting. He's also written for NYPD Blue, The Shield, Dexter and co-created Dark Angel with Avatar director James Cameron, which ran on Fox from 2000 to 2002 and helped launch Jessica Alba to stardom.

Powers chronicles the work and lives of police detectives who investigate superpower-related homicides, focusing on former superhero Christian Walker and his partners, most prominently Deena Pilgrim. The comic debuted in 2000 at Image Comics, before moving to Marvel's creator-owned Icon imprint in 2004. Late last year, the title relaunched with a new #1 issue.

Power Rangers are back in February 2011

After the recent reacquisition from Disney, Haim Saban is moving full speed ahead with promoting his return to the Power Rangers franchise. Early next year, Nickelodeon will premiere the official 19th season of the series, entitled POWER RANGERS SAMURAI.

Adapting the 2009 Super Sentai Series SAMURAI SENTAI SHINKENGER, the series will revolve around five teens who must master the art of Bushido to control the elements of fire, water, sky, forest, and earth. Saban promises that unlike Disney’s previous two installments, JUNGLE FURY (2008) and RPM (2009), the series will have a fusion of comic relief and martial arts action like their Japanese counterparts.

As with each series, a cast of newcomers will play the Power Rangers. Alex Heartman has been cast as Red Samurai Ranger Jayden. Najee-De-Tiege has been cast as Blue Samurai Ranger Kevin. Erika Fong has been cast as Pink Samurai Ranger Mia. Hector David Jr. has been cast as Green Samurai Ranger Mike. Rounding out the cast is Brittany Anne Pirtle as Yellow Samurai Ranger Emily. Supporting characters include the Rangers’ mentor Takeru, played by series veteran Rene Naufahu (POWER RANGERS SPD); and Spike, played by Felix Ryan.

The series will also not last one, but two full seasons, with a total of 40 episodes. Shooting began over the summer in New Zealand. Fans of the original Power Rangers series will also be treated in February when Nicktoons will begin to air the previous 18 seasons, beginning with 1993’s MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS.

Nickelodeon and Saban Brands released the first teaser trailer to POWER RANGERS SAMURAI on November 24, 2010 and the new Rangers made an appearance at this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. check it out below.

New Superhero series for Syfy

Seems like Syfy is joining the fray and getting there own superhero tv series about ordinary citizens who gain extraordinary abilities called Alphas. Syfy was impressed by the 90 minute pilot, because Alphas just got the green light for 11 episodes in addition to that 90-minute pilot. Here's how an earlier Syfy press release described the series:

Alphas follows a team of ordinary citizens whose brain anomalies imbue them with extraordinary mental and physical abilities. Taking the law into their own hands, the unlikely team, led by Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn) investigates cases that suggest other Alpha activity to uncover what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon have not been able or willing to solve. These gifted individuals must balance their quirky personalities and disparate backgrounds with their not always visible powers as they work to solve crimes, stop the ticking time bomb and catch the enemy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck) headlines the cast which also includes Warren Christie, Malik Yoba, Laura Mennell, Ryan Cartwright and Azita Ghanizada. Callum Keith Rennie (Battlestar Galactica) guest stars in the pilot.
