Black Panther gets a writer

Marvel Studios has hired Mark Bailey to write the script for The Black Panther, reports Heat Vision.

Bailey hails from the documentary film world and his credits include HBO documentaries such as "Pandemic: Facing AIDS" and "Ghost of Abu Ghraib." The trade says his latest project is a feature adaptation of the non-fiction book "The Last of the Tribe: The Epic Quest to Save a Lone Man in the Amazon," to which Doug Liman is attached to direct.

The Black Panther first appeared in the pages of the "Fantastic Four" comic in 1966. The character is the king of a resource-rich fictional African country who becomes a superhero.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige is producing.

Black Panther on DVD

Shout! Factory has announced a Jan. 18 release for Marvel Knights Animation: Black Panther on DVD.

The animated series' six episodes, based on the comic book by Reginald Hudlin and John Romita Jr., were originally intended -- but never aired -- for BET.

Black Panther features a voice cast including Djimon Hounsou as Black Panther; music artist and actress Jill Scott as Storm; Kerry Washington as Princess Shuri; Alfre Woodard as both Dondi Reese and Queen Mother; Carl Lumbly as Uncle S'Yan; and Stan Lee as General Wallace.

The Marvel Knights Animation: Black Panther DVD includes extensive bonus content and a graphic rich cover, plus a unique replica of comic book-style plastic sleeve packaging that bridges the comic book to DVD concept.

Here's how the series is described:

"Deep in the heart of Africa lies Wakanda, an advanced and unconquerable civilization. A family of warrior-kings possessing superior speed, strength and agility has governed this mysterious nation as long as time itself. The latest in this famed line is young King T'Challa, the great hero known worldwide as the Black Panther.

"Now, outsiders once again threaten to invade and plunder Wakanda. Leading this brutal assault is Klaw, a deadly assassin with the blood of T'Challa's murdered father on his hands, who brings with him a strong army of super-powered mercenaries. Even with Wakanda's might and his own superhuman skills, can the Black Panther prevail against this deadly invading force?"

Marvel Knights Animation: Black Panther DVD is priced to own at $14.97.

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear

As announced Tuesday evening on G4's Attack of the Show, Black Panther will take Daredevil's place as both the guardian of Hell's Kitchen and the "Man Without Fear" starting in December.

As of issue #513, the ongoing Daredevil series — previously reported to be ending with #512 in November — will become Black Panther: The Man Without Fear. The change is a result of the currently unfolding Shadowland story arc, and corresponds with the "Who Will Be The New Man Without Fear?" teaser images released last month by Marvel Comics, where Black Panther was presented as one of five possible candidates for the title. Shadowland ends in November.

i must admit its a strange fit, but i'm interested to see how Marvel pulls this one off.

Black Panther coming to everyone digitally

Official Press Release

Marvel Knights Animation is proud to announce Black Panther: Who Is The Black Panther?, a twelve-episode, weekly, all-new series debuting on iTunes, Xbox LIVE, Microsoft Zune and PlayStation®Network on June 23rd.

Inspired by the acclaimed graphic novel from respected filmmaker/producer Reginald Hudlin and legendary comic book artist John Romita Jr, Black Panther: Who Is The Black Panther? introduces viewers to the Black Panther, the warrior king of Wakanda, a technologically advanced nation in the heart of Africa. As outside forces conspire to plunder this proud nation, the Black Panther will face his greatest threats as he meets Klaw, the man who murdered his father.

“The positive responses to news of the show have been so overwhelming, it’s great to finally make the Black Panther series available to everyone,” said Hudlin. “Audiences get caught up on many levels – seeing John Romita Jr’s art come to life; the quality of the voice work by an award winning cast; the boldness of the politics, the music and humor. But see it for yourself!”

Romita Jr added, “The reaction by any person, upon viewing footage of a black panther, is universal: Awe. There is no more elegant a creature on the face of the planet. The creation of the character by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, in a turbulent political time, maintained that quality. Reggie Hudlin's updated version follows that and adds an amazing, cinematic flair to it. In my opinion, reading, and now viewing, the Black Panther series is much akin to witnessing a panther in person. Enjoy the elegance of the story, the elegance of the actors, their voices, their words, and....the imagery.”

This exciting series also features the voices of major celebrities including Academy Award-nominee Djimon Hounsou as Black Panther; Jill Scott as Storm, Kerry Washington as Princess Shuri; Alfre Woodard as both Dondi Reese and Queen Mother; Carl Lumbly as Uncle S’Yan; and comics legend Stan Lee in a special role.

Black Panther Animated Opening Intro

Australia got this first, not sure why, maybw atest market to see if it will fly in the U.S. Supposedly this is supposed to be airing on BET as there first animated program ever but haven;t been able to find any concrete info on it though. I have been waiting on this for some time ever since they announced it back in San Diego Comic Convention back in 2008. but we snagged the opening intro for the series check it out below.

The series is written and co-produced by Reginald Hudlin, and premiered this month on Australian children's channel ABC3. Djimon Hounsou voices Black Panther, king of the African nation of Wakanda.

Comics fans will certainly appreciate the John Romita Jr. art used in the intro (or at least, it sure looks like Romita's art) from the "Who Is the Black Panther?" story arc authored by Hudlin and Romita.

Along with Hounsou as T'Challa, Stan Lee provides the voice of General Wallace, JB Blanc voices The Black Knight and (wait for it...) Batroc, Kerry Washington voices Princess Shuri and Jill Scott provides the voice of X-Men member Storm.
