A look at the New "Star Tours"

Coming straight from DisneyParks Blog, the article is right from the mouth, er, keyboard of Tom Fitzgerald, Executive VP & Senior Creative Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering: Since everything we do at Imagineering starts with the story, it probably comes as no surprise that one of the first things we set out to do with the new Star Tours show was to figure out when our story should take place within the Star Wars timeline.

The existing Star Tours show we internally refer to as "6.5," since it takes place time-wise after Episode VI Return of the Jedi. Story development for the new show began "a long time ago," back in 1998, and a story treatment from that year carries the title "Episode 7 - A Star Tours Classic" - referring to the Boonta Classic race that was to be the main feature of the show.

But by the time Episode I hit the screens, we were all anxious to know what would surface in Episode III that we might build on for the show. Naturally, we were then curious how Episode III would complete the series. In the end, after numerous discussions, we decided to place our storyline between the two sets of Star Wars trilogies, giving the project the working title "Star Tours 3.5."

This time period gave our show team the ability to tap into the very best of the Star Wars characters and adventures. But turning the clock back also required some interesting changes for the Star Tours show. The Starspeeder 3000 would need to be an earlier model, the Starspeeder 1000, with a new pilot (especially since Rex, the original pilot, opens the original show saying it's his first flight!)

Our design team created a new Tour Droid for the show, an AC Series pilot we dubbed "Ace," with a personality as different from Rex as you can imagine.

We also created a new "spokesbot" for Star Tours, modeled after the WA-7 "Waitress Droid" from the Attack of the Clones. George Lucas suggested the name "Aly San San," in reference to Allison Janney, the wonderful actress who provides the voice for this new character. We had a terrific time with Allison in the recording sessions for the show - she brought a lot of warmth and humor to the part.

We had also recently posted up a video from the blog's YouTube channel that will be featured in the waiting line for the attraction. In case you missed it, here it is again for your viewing pleasure!

From Hit Girl to Emily the Strange

Chloe Moretz has signed on to play the leading role in Emily the Strange, reports Deadline.

The project was first mentioned over two years ago, when Dark Horse Entertainment President Mike Richardson announced his plans to bring the character to the big screen.

First started as an iconic image in 1991 and used to promote a clothing line from Cosmic Debris, the Gothic teen has developed a back story through a series of Dark Horse comics, which have been published since 2001.

Moretz, who became a fan-favorite after her turn as Hit Girl earlier this year in Kick-Ass, next stars in October's Let Me In as well as 2011's Martin Scorsese film Hugo Cabret.

Chloe Sullivan leaves "Smallville" for "Action Comics"

The DC source blog reported on Monday that "As we announced a few months back in San Diego, Chloe Sullivan will be appearing in the pages of the JIMMY OLSEN co-feature in ACTION COMICS by writer Nick Spencer and artist R.B. Silva, starting next week.

Over at TV GUIDE, there’s a first look at artist Silva’s take on the character – but that’s not all. Fans will be able to download digital versions of the 10-page story from ACTION COMICS #893 for free via the DC Comics and Comixology apps. What more incentive do you need to give the story a try?"

Wildstorm Ends, folded into the DCU

DC Entertainment has announced it is ending the WildStorm Productions imprint in December.

In a joint statement, DC Comics co-publishers Jim Lee (who founded WildStorm) and Dan DiDio said that while the imprint will discontinue, the characters will continue to be published.

"In this soft marketplace, these characters need a break to regroup and redefine what made them once unique and cutting edge. While these will be the final issues published under the WildStorm imprint, it will not be the last we will see of many of these heroes. We, along with Geoff Johns, have a lot of exciting plans for these amazing characters, so stay tuned."

WildStorm's editorial team will undergo a restructuring and be folded into the overall DC Comics Digital team, based in Burbank, Calif., which will be led by Lee and John Rood.

DC Entertainment earlier announed it will relocate its business functions related to and supporting multi-media and digital content production to Burbank. DCE's publishing operations will remain in New York. The announcements were made by Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment.

"These organizational changes reinforce the strengths of DC's greatest legacies -- most importantly its people and its creative talent -- and offer greater opportunity for maximum growth, success and efficiency in the future," said Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment. "Our two offices will stretch and build their respective areas of focus, while prioritizing and aggressively striving to connect and cooperate more strongly than ever before between them and with their colleagues at Warner Bros."

"This strategic business realignment allows us to fully integrate and expand the DC brand in feature films as well as across multiple distribution platforms of Warner Bros. and Time Warner," said Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group, to whom Nelson reports. "We are creating a seamless, cohesive unit that will bring even more great characters and content to consumers everywhere."

The relocation process is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011, with DCE's businesses related to the development and production of feature films, television, digital media, video games and consumer products as well as the company's administrative functions relocating to a Warner Bros.-managed property in Burbank.

DC's Zuda imprint has also been ended.

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse Clip

Warner Home Video has provided SuperHeroHype with a new clip from Superman/Batman: Apocalypse along with four more images from the film, coming to Blu-ray and DVD on September 28. The clip depicts the harried first few minutes of time on Earth for Kara, a Kryptonian cousin of Superman who has not yet understood or harnessed her powers.

Based on the DC Comics series/graphic novel "Superman/Batman: Supergirl" by Jeph Loeb, Michael Turner & Peter Steigerwald, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is produced by animation legend Bruce Timm and directed by Lauren Montgomery (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) from a script by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Tab Murphy (Gorillas in the Mist).

In Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, a spaceship splashes down in Gotham City Harbor -- leading Batman and Superman to encounter a mysterious Kryptonian with powers as great as those of the Man of Steel. The Kryptonian is soon revealed to be Kara, cousin of Superman, who takes her under his wing to educate her about the ways of Earth. However, the villainous Darkseid has other plans. Seeing an opportunity to finally defeat Superman, Darkseid abducts and gains control of Kara, utilizing the powerful Kryptonian to do his bidding. It’s up to Batman and Superman to save Kara, but they’ll have to take the fight to Darkseid within his hostile world – where unknown, deadly threats lurk around every corner, including a brainwashed Kryptonian able to match Superman blow-for-blow.

Tim Daly and Kevin Conroy return to their seminal roles as Superman and Batman, respectively. The guest cast is headed by Andre Braugher as the daunting Darkseid. Summer Glau provides the voice of Supergirl, and Ed Asner reprises his "Superman: The Animated Series"/"Justice League" role as Granny Goodness.

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear

As announced Tuesday evening on G4's Attack of the Show, Black Panther will take Daredevil's place as both the guardian of Hell's Kitchen and the "Man Without Fear" starting in December.

As of issue #513, the ongoing Daredevil series — previously reported to be ending with #512 in November — will become Black Panther: The Man Without Fear. The change is a result of the currently unfolding Shadowland story arc, and corresponds with the "Who Will Be The New Man Without Fear?" teaser images released last month by Marvel Comics, where Black Panther was presented as one of five possible candidates for the title. Shadowland ends in November.

i must admit its a strange fit, but i'm interested to see how Marvel pulls this one off.

Samurai Dead Rising

The Japanese game maker CAPCOM has collaborated with character designer Norio Shioyama (Armored Trooper Votoms, Yoroiden Samurai Trooper/Ronin Warriors) to create a series of three anime shorts inspired by CAPCOM's Dead Rising 2 survival horror game. The first 166-second episode of Samurai Dead Rising has begun streaming on CAPCOM's website and its YouTube channel on Friday. The anime shorts imagine if the setting of a "zombie paradise" happens to be a jidai geki (Japanese period drama works made famous by samurai films).

Shioyama served as the project's main visual artist, animation director, and animator, while Manabu Inada (formerly of MTV USA) served as the creative director, director, and producer. Shōhei Narabe (Kome Kome Club) composed the music and designed the soundtrack.

Dead Rising 2 will ship in Europe, North America, and Japan at the end of this month. In January, CAPCOM had announced Zombrex Dead Rising Sun (Shibyō Osen Dead Rising), a live-action movie version of Dead Rising 2 with the production company Digital Frontier (Appleseed, Resident Evil: Degeneration). The anime studio Gonzo collaborated with CAPCOM on animated footage for the Super Street Fighter IV fighting game.

SHANA “SCARLETT” O’HARA is skilled at undercover work, and can maneuver her way around a boardroom or high-society reception. But, she has little actual combat experience. She can grow impatient and condescending with those she deems less intelligent than she (which is basically everyone on the team excepting SNAKE EYES), but she quickly comes to realize she can learn a lot from the “ordinary” G.I. Joe team.

SNAKE EYES
Ninja/Commando
Weapon(s) of choice: Sword and Plasma Pulse Uzi
A mute, masked man-of-mystery -- not officially affiliated with the military – SNAKE EYES was a mercenary whom SHANA “SCARLETT” O’HARA occasionally utilized for special missions. He was well-trained by the secretive Arashikage clan in the ways of the Ninja. A loner who’s not used to working with others, even after SNAKE EYES “joins” the Joes on the road, he comes and goes as he pleases. SHANA “SCARLETT” O’HARA knows him well enough to “translate” what he’s thinking; rumors abound amongst the team that their relationship is more than just master and disciple. The G.I. Joe team depends upon the “shadow warrior” skills of SNAKE EYES to stay one step ahead of their pursuers, and his profound sense of honor keeps him “attached” to the G.I. Joe team and their cause.

ROADBLOCK - aka Corporal Marvin Hinton (Kevin Michael Richardson)
Heavy Ordinance Specialist; Mechanic \ Driver; Chef
Weapon of choice: Big Plasma Pulse Machine Gun
MARVIN “ROADBLOCK” HINTON is a brawny African-American country boy from Biloxi. He’s a guitar playing head banger who’s constantly blasting heavy metal though his headphones, and singing along. He’s cheerful… boisterous… a chatterbox. As the team’s de facto chef, his culinary specialties tend toward roadkill. MARVIN “ROADBLOCK” HINTON keeps his positive outlook intact even during the most dangerous of situations…which is pretty much every situation since the G.I. Joe team have been on the run, trying to clear their names and take down Cobra.

TUNNEL RAT - aka Private First Class Nicky Lee (Matthew Yang King)
Medic and Infiltration Specialist
Weapon of choice: Plasma Pulse Sub-Machine Gun
Of Asian descent and hailing from Brooklyn, NICKY “TUNNEL RAT” LEE is an eccentric medic with a prickly high-strung personality and attitude. He spent a lot of his youth exploring subway and sewer tunnels. As a result, NICKY “TUNNEL RAT” LEE is most comfortable in dark, confined places and possesses an arcane knowledge of soil, worms, insects, fungus, and anything else that thrives under or in the ground. Known for his biting sense of humor, as well as his nostril-burning scent.

RIPCORD - aka Private Wallace Weems (Khary Payton)
HALO jumper/specialist
Weapon of choice: Plasma Pulse Sub-Machine Gun
A Fresh-faced African-American rookie who’s eager to prove himself, WALLACE “RIPCORD” WEEMS is an extreme-sport daredevil who is seemingly fearless in battle, and cracks wise every chance he gets. Arguably, his attempts at humor can get a little grating; just ask NICKY

FLINT - aka Warrant Officer Dashiell Faireborn (Johnny Messner)
Commands The Falcons; a military task force assigned to hunt down the Joes.
Now a highly-decorated military officer, DASHIELL “FLINT” FAIREBORN shares a rivalry with CONRAD “DUKE” HAUSER that goes back to their high school football days. And since DASHIELL “FLINT” FAIREBORN knows CONRAD “DUKE” HAUSER better than anyone, he’s put in charge of tracking CONRAD “DUKE” HAUSER down. Wearing his signature beret, DASHIELL “FLINT” FAIREBORN can seem cocky and egotistical upon first meeting, but – underneath -- he’s a very decent man who sees a very clear line between “right” and “wrong.” He has no patience for Cobra conspiracy tales, however, and is all about successfully completing his mission: the capture of the fugitive G.I. Joe team.

LADY JAYE - aka Sergeant Alison Hart- Burnett (Nika Futterman)
A tough and scrappy, “one of the guys” Latina, the “Lady” in ALISON “LADY JAYE” HART- BURNETT is ironic. She and CONRAD “DUKE” HAUSER also have a history together (CONRAD “DUKE” HAUSER once saved her life), and she finds it much harder to believe the accusations brought against him and his team. Recruited by DASHIELL “FLINT” FAIREBORN to aid in his pursuit of the G.I. Joe team, she secretly feeds the G.I. Joe team Intel so they might avoid capture, and provides them with access and much-needed supplies in their battle against Cobra.

GENERAL CLAYTON ABERNATHY (Lee Majors)
A commanding officer who walks with a cane due to a combat injury, but is still tough-as-nails. GENERAL CLAYTON ABERNATHY doesn’t trust the smiling face of Cobra, but knows they carry a tremendous amount of political influence. There’s some evidence that he may believe in the evidence of the G.I. Joe team. Regardless, GENERAL CLAYTON ABERNATHY still feels the G.I. Joe team should turn themselves in, and has no qualms about ordering DASHIELL “FLINT” FAIREBORN to capture the Fugitives.

COBRA COMMANDER - aka Adam DeCobray (Charlie Adler)
The leader of Cobra who hides behind the very public persona of ADAM DECOBRAY, the benevolent, reclusive CEO of Cobra Industries -- a man who doesn’t actually exist (except as simulated video images). The real COBRA COMMANDER is a mysterious, masked megalomaniac who believes humanity is doomed, and must be destroyed and replaced with something better. While not physically intimidating, COBRA COMMANDER inspires tremendous fear and wields incredible power.

BARONESS - aka Anastasia Cisarovna (Tatyana Yassukovich)
ANASTASIA “BARONESS” CISAROVNA, is Cobra Industries’ communications director and chief architect of their benevolent public face. She’s also a ruthless, femme fatale corporate saboteur, chiefly responsible for covering-up Cobra’s nefarious tracks by eliminating witnesses and tying-up loose ends. As such, she has made the hunt for the G.I. Joe team her top priority.

DESTRO - aka James McCullen (Unkown Voice Actor)
A Scottish weapons dealer/manufacturer descended from a long line of magnates, JAMES “DESTRO” MCCULLEN began M.A.R.S. Industries as a competitor to Cobra, until M.A.R.S. was acquired by COBRA COMMANDER in a VERY hostile takeover. As “punishment” for crimes against the “Snake”, JAMES “DESTRO” MCCULLEN is forced to wear an irremovable metal helmet. He now serves Cobra with his technologically-advanced designs and business acumen, all while biding his time until he can overthrow COBRA COMMANDER and regain control of his family business.

STORM SHADOW - aka Tomisaburo Arashikage (Unknown Voice Actor)
Driven by pride and jealousy, TOMISABURO “STORM SHADOW” ARASHIKAGE trained alongside SNAKE EYES, whom he blames for the murder of their Uncle – The Hard Master (one-time patriarch of the Arashikage clan). After catching a glimpse of SNAKE EYES on Cobra news footage, TOMISABURO “STORM SHADOW” ARASHIKAGE tracks his nemesis down, and resumes their blood feud. When ANASTASIA “BARONESS” CISAROVNA learns of same, she offers TOMISABURO “STORM SHADOW” ARASHIKAGE the resources to turn the Arashikage into the most powerful criminal force in the world, in exchange for his occasional freelance services as assassin… and bodyguard to Cobra Commander.

DR. MINDBENDER - Dr. Brian Bender (Charlie Schlatter)
DR. BRIAN “MINDBENDER” BENDER is head of Cobra’s secretive bio-tech division. A gifted, brash genius in genetic engineering, cloning, mutation and cellular regeneration, DR. MINDBENDER is full of youthful enthusiasm for his work -- even though it typically involves the dangerous, the unethical, and the illegal. Cobra’s secret Bio Viper program provides the perfect playground for this deranged scientist; what DR. MINDBENDER lacks in conscience, he makes up for with attitude.

ZARTAN (Unknown Voice Actor)
A ruthless biker gang-leading thug, ZARTAN becomes a valuable asset to Cobra (and an incredible threat to the G.I. Joe team) when he stumbles upon and becomes the only person who can wear an experimental Cobra “chameleon tech” suit -- giving him the ability to perfectly mimic the appearance, voice, and mannerisms of anyone the suit comes into contact with.

MAJOR BLUDD - aka Sebastian Bludd (Unknown Voice Actor)
A bloodthirsty Aussie whose dirty deeds are for sale to the highest bidder. And nobody bids higher than Cobra. An up-and-comer with something to prove, MAJOR BLUDD is determined to be the greatest mercenary in the world, and earn the giant paycheck that goes with it --especially the bounty attached to the capture (or demise) of the G.I. Joe team.

TOMAX AND XAMOT ((Unknown Voice Actor)
Identical twins with fantastical abilities in hypnotic persuasion and mind control, TOMAX and XAMOT began as crooked cult leaders who harnessed their powers to fleece “Believers” – including BRIAN “MINDBENDER” BENDER. Despite being enslaved by Cobra, the Twins plan to enhance their natural abilities and unleash their wrath upon the world. The key to their success lies in their connection to one another, a telepathic force so strong that if one twin is struck, the other feels every bit of pain.

Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers comic

The theme song is still indelibly etched in the minds of late ‘80s and early ‘90s kids raised on a steady diet of the Disney Afternoon.
Ch-ch-ch-chip and Dale. Rescue Rangers.

Debuting in 1989, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers re-imagined Disney’s long-running chipmunk troublemakers as a detective duo, joined by a couple of mice — cheese-loving adventurer Monterey Jack and spunky inventor Gadget — and a surprisingly helpful housefly named Zipper. The show was one of Disney’s many syndicated animated hits of that era; running for 65 episodes, spawning a couple of NES games and getting 19 issues of a comic from Disney’s short-lived comic book publishing division.

Twenty years later, BOOM! Studios is following up on the success of their Darkwing Duck comic and debuting a new Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers ongoing series this December, from Darkwing writer Ian Brill and with Leonel Castellani (Super Hero Squad) on art. Newsarama contacted Brill to find out if there’s still no case too big, no case too small. check it out HERE

Doctor Who season six details

Doctor Who has been on quite a roll since returning to television in 2005. It's gone through five seasons and the show is now featuring its third character portraying The Doctor. Now the show is coming up to its sixth season and the Guardian recently reported than this season will have a few changes to it compared to the first five. Steven Moffat, who currently runs the show is making this season into two separate parts and promises a game-changing mid-season finale.

"I kept referring to a mid-season finale. So we are going to make it two series – seven episodes at Easter building to an earth-shattering climax, a cliffhanger we could never normally do because it would be too long before it came back. An enormous game-changing cliffhanger that will change everything... The wrong expression would be to say we are splitting it in two. We are making it two separate series."

For those who are a little disappointed by this news, look at the bright side. Instead of being 6-8 months away from the new Doctor Who series. The first series of the episodes will appear during Easter, the rest during the fall, and then the Christmas special. As Moffat puts it, "you are never going to be more than few months from the new series of Doctor Who." But where do you go from there? What aspects of the old Doctor Who television series can you re-tap? What new ideas are on the plate?

One of the things discussed in this interview is, when casting the new Doctor, if they considered a female to play the part. "I think about it sometimes and maybe it will happen someday. It wouldn't have been right this time... A woman can play the part. You have to remember the single most important thing about regeneration is you must convince the audience and the children that's it's not a new man, it's not a different man, it's the same one. It's a bigger ask if you turn him into a woman." Moffat also stated that he won't be leaving the show as of yet.

Also returning is Karen Gillan, who plays Amy Pond. She plans on taking the show season by season. "
you can't really look beyond that so who knows? I'm having fun right now." The newest season of Doctor Who should start around Christmas of 2010, and the new season will continue onwards around Easter 2011. Is splitting up the season a good thing?

Locke & Key on FOX

Variety reports that Locke & Key has been given a full series order by Fox, who will air the show as an hourlong genre drama. Steven Spielberg, who was previously attached as a producer, is no longer involved with the adaptation of the Joe Hill comic book series.

Distributed by IDW Publishing, Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them... and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all.

Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Josh Friedman ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") will write and produce

Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" to TV

The Neil Gaiman-penned comic book series "The Sandman," is in the early stages of being developed into a TV series.

Warner Bros. TV is in the midst of acquiring television rights from sister company DC Entertainment and in talks with several writer-producers about adapting the 1990s comic.

"Sandman" told the tale of Morpheus, the Lord of the Dreaming, a deity who personifies dreams. The book began in the horror realm but quickly made its mark in fantasy and mythology as Gaiman introduced the Endless, a group of powerful brothers and sisters named Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium (as well as Dream).

A movie version of “Sandman” has been in development since the mid-’90s, with an early version involving Roger Avery. The movie version cooled earlier in the decade, with the thinking moving to the best way to tackle an adaptation is the TV route.

DC was in talks with HBO and James Mangold but Gaiman was not officially involved with the HBO attempt, though he and Mangold held several rounds of talks surrounding characters and story. The author is not involved in the new developments, though since it is early in the process, that may change. In fact, securing Gaiman will prove key for the project to go forward.

Kripke has been described as interested in tackling an adaptation but cautious because the comic book has such a passionate following and is held in such high regard. It’s the kind of series where each production decision, from casting to script to design, would be scrutinized by devotees.

Eric Kripke, creator of the CW’s "Supernatural," is at the top of the list to write, produce or helm the series as Kripke has managed to create and sustain “Supernatural,” which week in and week out deals with fantasy, mythological and horror elements.

"Runaways" begin filming after Christmas

"Marvel's “The Runaways” is planning a January - July 2011 shoot."

They followed up this tweet with another tweet saying the name of the movie has been changed to "Small Faces" and filming will now begin in the Spring of 2011.

"Update: Marvel's “The Runaways” (aka "Small Faces"), is scheduled to begin filming in March in L.A."

Runaways follows a group of teenagers who find that some family secrets are bigger than others when they discover their parents are actually super-villains. Running away from their homes, the teens band together and begin a journey of discovery, both of their parents' origins and of their own inherited powers, while trying to make up for the evil done by their folks.
