Batman: Under the Red Hood tips the next DC animated film

DC has been killing it with their DC Universe Original Animated Movies like Green Lantern: First Flight and Wonder Woman, so we've got high hopes for Batman: Under The Red Hood, which is based on a series of comics written by Judd Winick back in 2005 that brought back formerly dead Robin Jason Todd as an imbalanced anti-hero with his sites set on Gotham's criminal underground. Box art for Batman: Under the Red Hood has revealed DC Entertainment's next full-length animated movie which will, again, showcase Batman and Superman.

The film, which comes out on DVD and Blu-ray on July 27th will have a slew of extras including a short film focusing the spotlight on scarred cowboy Jonah Hex, with the special edition DVD boasting a history of Robin and the Blu-ray looking at how Todd got the axe thanks to fans back in the '80s. The film itself will star Batman (Bruce Greenwood), Nightwing (Neil Patrick Harris), Red Hood (Jensen Ackles), The Joker (John DiMaggio) and even Ra's al Ghul (Jason Isaacs) and Black Mask (Wade Willams). It'll be interesting to see how a straight-up adaptation of a somewhat controversial Batman story will go!

Several eagle-eyed comic fans have spotted the title of DC's next animated film on the back cover of the Amazon.com Exclusive Blu-Ray edition of Batman: Under the Red Hood.

Recent internet chatter revolves around the assumption the title itself may hint at the debut of either Darkseid or Supergirl. There is no official word from Warner Bros. entertainment which comics story line the movie will follow, if any. This will be the fourth animated film highlighting a Superman and Batman team-up. Speculation as to this latest film's plot will be put to rest come July 27th, 2010, when Batman: Under the Red Hood becomes available for purchase.

DC Entertainment has two animated short films already planned, Jonah Hex and Green Arrow, which will accompany their full length features. There is also a rumored Batman: Year One adaptation in the works.
