After the recent reacquisition from Disney, Haim Saban is moving full speed ahead with promoting his return to the Power Rangers franchise. Early next year, Nickelodeon will premiere the official 19th season of the series, entitled POWER RANGERS SAMURAI.
Adapting the 2009 Super Sentai Series SAMURAI SENTAI SHINKENGER, the series will revolve around five teens who must master the art of Bushido to control the elements of fire, water, sky, forest, and earth. Saban promises that unlike Disney’s previous two installments, JUNGLE FURY (2008) and RPM (2009), the series will have a fusion of comic relief and martial arts action like their Japanese counterparts.
As with each series, a cast of newcomers will play the Power Rangers. Alex Heartman has been cast as Red Samurai Ranger Jayden. Najee-De-Tiege has been cast as Blue Samurai Ranger Kevin. Erika Fong has been cast as Pink Samurai Ranger Mia. Hector David Jr. has been cast as Green Samurai Ranger Mike. Rounding out the cast is Brittany Anne Pirtle as Yellow Samurai Ranger Emily. Supporting characters include the Rangers’ mentor Takeru, played by series veteran Rene Naufahu (POWER RANGERS SPD); and Spike, played by Felix Ryan.
The series will also not last one, but two full seasons, with a total of 40 episodes. Shooting began over the summer in New Zealand. Fans of the original Power Rangers series will also be treated in February when Nicktoons will begin to air the previous 18 seasons, beginning with 1993’s MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS.
Nickelodeon and Saban Brands released the first teaser trailer to POWER RANGERS SAMURAI on November 24, 2010 and the new Rangers made an appearance at this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. check it out below.
